I actually took on an effort to reduce our home electric usage. Starting with the easiest step by far I began replacing all of the incandescent bulbs in my house with compact florescent and replacing the old floodlight and lantern fixtures in our backyard and on our garage with motion and day/night sensor units (which by the way were being left on 24/7!). Much to the chagrin of my wonderful wife who accurately pointed out that the newer bulbs had much less “natural” light. It wasn’t until I did the math that I was completely shocked at how much I money and electricity I was wasting and thus how much additional CO2 our family was contributing to our planets woes using the Calculator found on the US Environmental Protection Agency website. By my calculations we were needlessly spending about an extra 75 dollars a month, and thus pumping an additional 12,330 Pounds of CO2 into the atmosphere more than I needed to just to keep the lights on (No Kidding)!
